Item Digital Civic Engagement and Youth Participation: Hungarian Lis Students' Perspective (abstracts)(Ukrainian State University of Science and Technologies, Dnipro, 2022) Yap, Joseph Marmol; Németh, Réka; Barátné, Ágnes HajduENG: Political participation and civic engagement are attributes of a democratic nation. While the youth of the 21st century share their thoughts and ideas on social media, there is a declining interest in politics or they must have created a novel way of discussing political information. The young generation’s political participation is essential for a functioning democratic nation. The youth is also expected to be politically knowledgeable with information readily available online. Access to this information will help them to make informed decisions. Sources of political information may also come from family and friends. As young people deal with an abundance of online information shared on social media, how was their experience in engaging with family and close friends? The research would like to understand how Hungarian LIS students use social media in online political participation and how social media political information affects the youth’s trust and judgment when interacting with their close family and friends online. The research is underlined by the fact that it was carried out at a particularly politically crucial time before the election.Item Digital Civic Engagement and Youth Participation: Hungarian Lis Students' Perspective (presentation)(Український державний університет науки і технологій, Дніпро, 2022) Yap, Joseph Marmol; Németh, Réka; Barátné, Ágnes HajduENG: Political participation and civic engagement are attributes of a democratic nation. A Citation Analysis of Master’s theses in the Field of Education(Dnipro National University of Railway Transport named after Academician V. Lazaryan, 2019) Yap, Joseph Marmol; Kozhayeva, A.EN: Objective. The quality of library collection depends on how the librarians select materials for purchasing based on existing collection development policy. In the absence of approved policy, working guidelines take effect so there would be a selection guidelines criteria. The use of available selection tools, online book reviews, faculty recommendations, and standard lists will help the collection building. This paper aims to provide an overview of the type of materials Kazakh students utilize to complete their master’s thesis. Specifically, it will have the following objectives: 1) to categorize the types of sources graduate students use in their thesis; 2) to compare the actual count of e-journal titles available in our collection versus the number of e-journal titles used in the reference list; 3) to identify the common journal titles used by the students and its overall journal ranking credibility based on prestige; 4) To further develop the e-resources collection based on the citation analysis. Methods. In 2019, 20 e-theses were uploaded in the repository coming from one school (may also be called college or faculty). It was decided to select from one school only to determine the relevance of the collection coming from one discipline. A sample of 10 theses (50%) was analyzed in this study. Citation analysis was used to measure which materials are currently available in the library. It will also give an impression of whether the material is being used or not. Collection of data was done in an organized manner. A table was created to list the number of referenced items found per thesis. The researchers identified the number of print books, e-journals, conference proceedings, theses and other types of materials. To determine the specific journal titles, they were carefully extracted. Duplicate titles were combined and were counted as one unique entry. Using the SJR online, the researchers identified the quartiles of each title and determined the impact of the journals based on the ranking. Journal titles were searched and availability was verified using the online journal finder A-Z journal title list provided by the EBSCOHost. Non-quartile journal titles were also verified using Scopus. Results. An average of 59 references was listed by a graduate student in his/her master’s thesis. Each student may have used 17.6 print books to cite in their thesis and 32.4 journal articles in which some of them may have referenced a suspected predatory journal. There are 199 unique journal titles cited in 10 master’s theses. 19.6% of which is unavailable in the subscription but needs to be verified if they are indexed in leading citation databases. At least 50% of the theses had more journal titles categorized as Q1 journals. Another 50% the theses included more Q2 journals than Q1. One thesis cited more journal publications with no quartile but was able to reference 68% of journal titles coming from Q1-Q4 journals. In terms of journal availability, the library holds 80% of the journal titles cited in the reference list that are available whether by subscription or Open Access. Conclusions. It is apparent that master’s students from the graduate school of education will likely cite more journal articles than books. At least 50% of the students get their references from Q1-ranked journals based from the SJR ranking. The library has a promising and huge collection of e-journal titles as it has almost 80% of the titles available in the library subscription. The sample revealed that the library is capable of providing a good quality of journal collection that can be used by the students and faculty members as well. We can proudly say that our collection is above the average. We need to still dig deeper how much of our collection is used extensively by the other members of the academic community.Item Is our Collection Enough or Underutilized? A Citation Analysis of Master’s Theses in the Field of Education (presentation)(Дніпровський національний університет залізничного транспорту імені академіка В. Лазаряна, 2019) Yap, Joseph Marmol; Kozhayeva, AltynayEN: The strength of the collection whether print or e-resources depends on how well we can cater to the needs of our users. Although we can’t provide a complete and very extensive collection, we can study the current resources so we can fully maximize what we have and pin-point the areas where we need to improve. This study will employ citation analysis to trace the student’s information needs and to monitor the types of sources they use whether they utilize the print and/or e-resources collection of the library. This is an attempt to review the journal titles referenced by the students in their graduate thesis. The librarians will verify the authoritativeness of the material versus the amount of suspected predatory journals included in the reference list. The study will also be the basis to improve and further develop the library’s e-resource collection.Item Libraries Civic Roles and Responsibilities: Issues in Information Crises and Information Disorders(Ukrainian State University of Science and Technologies, Dnipro, 2023) Yap, Joseph MarmolENG: Introduction. Public libraries can be strong advocates of civic engagement. Libraries that educate and inform society have a responsibility to rekindle civil society and must spread their role beyond physical and virtual space. Civic practices on fighting fake news in certain areas are highlighted. Coward et al. (2018) mentioned several examples. Public libraries can use their influence to help students and librarians spot misinformation and caution others against spreading it. The objective of this paper is to introduce how librarians understand information crises and information disorders. Methods. Using discourse analysis, public librarians were interviewed to identify how they conceptualize and understand information disorders. Results. This ongoing study showed that their understanding of credible sources should be verified, objective, and reliable. An in-depth analysis is underway for this study. Conclusions. This pilot study provides a picture of how public librarians interact with the information around them and how they are able to filter information circulating on social media.Item Library Promotion and user Engagement in Pandemic Times: The Case of Kazakhstan(Dnipro National University of Railway Transport named after Academician V. Lazaryan, 2020) Yap, Joseph MarmolEN: Objectives. In these trying times due to the global effect of pandemic, what social media accounts do academic libraries in Kazakhstan maintain and how can they improve their social media engagement to continuously connect with their stakeholders? This report provides an overview of the current status of social media engagement of selected academic libraries in Kazakhstan during the COVID-19 crises. This paper will give us a picture about the kinds of online postings shared by these libraries particularly with the use of Facebook. Methods. The top two universities ranked by Independent Quality Assurance Agency (IQAA) were considered in this report to be compared with the only autonomous organization of education in Kazakhstan. The library social media accounts of these three organizations were investigated to review the number of followers, frequency of posting, and its overall social media engagement. Data collected is publicly available to all potential users, followers, or subscribers. Using the post engagement rate (PER) formula introduced by Socialbakers (2013) and adapted by Peñaflor (2018) and Magno (2016), this report identifies and analyzes the average PER Facebook pages maintained by academic libraries. The engagement metrics looked into the number of interactions and the widest reach possible in every post. All three academic libraries investigated maintain a Facebook page. The other account was just created last February 2020. To compare Facebook data during the pandemic times, public information available from June – August 2020 was measured. Results. The social media platforms operated by the academic libraries in Kazakhstan are Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, VK, and YouTube. One of the earliest academic library Facebook accounts established in Kazakhstan started in 2010 with less than 3,000 accumulated followers after ten years. This shows a very slow rise in the number of followers considering an academic population of more than 5, 000 people in 2020. Data revealed that Eurasian National University Library’s Facebook account had a higher PER of 0.83 even if it only debut in 2020 compared to the Facebook page of Nazarbayev University which garnered 0.22 PER. KAZNU Library’s Facebook page had the highest PER of 1.02. Conclusions. Facebook is the most popular social media platform across the globe but it is not the case in Kazakhstan. Library marketing and promotion in Kazakhstan needs to be addressed as public relations is not the primary focus. The utilization of social media as a tool for user engagement is not fully developed. One way to look at it is to consider library staffing and identify their marketing background. The pandemic situation must be the turning point of academic libraries to enhance their reach with their stakeholders. It was a test to know the readiness of the library in terms of online communication and interaction.Item Library Promotion and User Engagement in Pandemic Times: The Case of Kazakhstan (abstracts)(Дніпровський національний університет залізничного транспорту імені академіка В. Lazaryan, 2019) Yap, Joseph Marmol; Kozhayeva, A.EN: Objective. The Nazarbayev University School of Mining and Geosciences was established in 2016 to study and conduct research on the vast mineral reserves of the country. The school now has three bachelor’s programs, two master’s programs and the recently launched PhD program. The purpose of the study is to determine how many subjects from Choice Reviews are already part of the collection, and how many the library needs to buy to create a good geological collection. Methods. Introducing new programs, it is important to identify the academic and additional resources that will need to be offered during training. In 2018, the library acquired Choice Reviews Online to help the subject librarians create good discipline-oriented collection. Results. According to the survey, only 12.5% of the list is part of an existing print collection, and 87.5% should be added as a potential collection of mining and geology sciences. The analysis of e-book collection is as follows: 55% of the list is already part of this collection, and 45% of the library is required to be purchased when developing an e-book collection. Conclusions. The university has only just begun to develop the field of mining and geology, so there is still time to expand the library's collection of these disciplines. Subject librarians are interested in adding important titles from standardized Choice Reviews tools; as well, they should review and identify various resources that are relevant to the promotion of research to acquire them.Item Use of Choice Reviews to Build the Geosciences Collection (presentation)(Дніпровський національний університет залізничного транспорту імені академіка В. Part I (presentation)(Дніпровський національний університет залізничного транспорту ім. акад. В. Лазаряна, Дніпро, 2021) Yap, Joseph Marmol; Tafalla, DarylEN: The pandemic saw a rise in the spread of information disorders. The proliferation of fake news and information affect our lives as it disrupts our relationship with family members and friends. Trust with each other is being questioned as different people believe in contrasting opinions from what they hear, read, or see in traditional media and social media. As the status of inoculation in the Philippines is slowly moving due to many factors, the citizens who want protection took time to get vaccinated. This survey research intends to understand how people from a fourth class municipality of Cavite made their decision to be vaccinated in spite of misinformation circulating from their close knitted physical interactions within family, friends, and neighbors up to the powerful influence of the traditional media and social media. Librarians have an emerging role to play. Librarians can be partners of a local government unit to promote the citizens well-being. Librarians provide sources of health information vital for an individual to help them arrive at an informed decision. The librarians can showcase the advantages and benefits of being vaccinated as evidenced by scientific publications and as endorsed by the World Health Organization.Item Vaccination Infodemic Among Сitizens of Magallanes, Cavite, Philippines.
